Migration of Courses from Moodle to Canvas

Dear Campus Community,
Migration of Courses from Moodle to Canvas
The UM Canvas Implementation Team is working with a third-party vendor, K16 Solutions, to migrate courses from Moodle into Canvas over the next several weeks. Our migration will include courses from Fall 2021 – Fall 2023. Courses from Spring and Summer 2024 will be migrated at a later date. This mass migration will include online, blended, hybrid, and many face-to-face courses. Courses with no use of activities or very minor use of content will not be included in this mass migration. Please know that there will be other migration methods available for courses that are not included in this migration with K16.
Over the last month, the UM Canvas implementation team worked with K16 on several iterations of migration testing with their tool to determine the customizations needed to improve the migration of course content. That work is now complete. K16 is performing the first small run of migrating courses, which will include those in the summer pilot, and will perform the larger mass migration shortly after. We anticipate the full migration to be complete the second week of April and will make an announcement when it is done.
While similar features exist between Moodle and Canvas, there are certain content and activity types in Moodle that do not have direct equivalencies in Canvas. K16’s services provide solutions for some of the content and activity types with no direct equivalences. Please review the Moodle to Canvas Migration Worksheet to learn more about how specific content will migrate with K16’s services and pay careful attention to the items you make use of in your Moodle courses. Also, be aware that student data and submissions will not be migrated from Moodle into Canvas. The migration includes content and activities only. Keep in mind that although content will migrate over to Canvas, the layout is different than Moodle and will require some adjustments to work within the Canvas layout. Participating in Canvas training will be important to help you with this.
Creating Canvas Users and Upcoming Training
The implementation team will announce when users are set up and available for faculty and staff to login. There is still testing underway with Banner and a new integration to automate this, and we anticipate user creation to be complete by the end of April. You will be provided a sandbox course for practice and will be enrolled in the self-paced, online tutorial UM Canvas Essentials course. Please check the Canvas Project-Training website for other on-demand and live training opportunities as well.
We look forward to working with you as we move into the migration and training phase of our Canvas implementation. Check the Canvas Project website for more information, and you can contact the team at SingleLMS@umontana.edu if you have questions.
