My journey began in Ghana, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Environmental and Safety Engineering from the University of Mines and Technology. After working in the agricultural, construction, and engineering industries for a few years, I decided to pursue a master's degree at an accredited university abroad. The Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ caught my attention due to the richness of its programs, the interdisciplinary nature of the Environmental Studies department, and the opportunity to learn from quality faculty.

I was particularly drawn to the program because it will allow me to explore sustainable living and apply this knowledge to improve health and safety in workplace settings. Currently, I'm working with my advisor, Dr. Fernando Sanchez, on my thesis, which analyzes the associations between socioeconomic factors and how they contribute to wildfires in national forests. This research aligns perfectly with my deep interest in GIS, mapping, and spatial studies.

In the summer of 2024, I had the opportunity to intern at Eagle Mine in Michigan as a Health and Safety Intern. My role involved conducting refuge chamber and self-rescuer inspections, drafting reports on hazard identifications, managing safety inventories, and participating in incident investigations. I also performed fall protection inspections and collaborated with MSHA inspectors on ground checks and mine rescue drills.

One of the most thrilling parts of my internship was going 3,000 feet underground to carry out refuge chamber inspections. This hands-on experience was both challenging and exhilarating, offering insights that I could never have gained in a classroom setting. I also conducted safety training sessions for contractors, which helped me enhance my communication and leadership skills.

This internship was truly an eye-opener. Working alongside experienced professionals and learning from my supervisors provided invaluable insights that will prepare me for my future goals.

I plan to complete my master's degree in Environmental Studies at UM in Spring 2025. After graduation, I aim to work as a Health and Safety Engineer, focusing on minimizing workplace accidents, improving working conditions, and promoting a safe and sound working environment. My goal is to make a tangible difference in people's lives by ensuring they return home safely each day.

In the long run, I aspire to acquire a Ph.D. after gaining valuable work experience and additional certifications to become a Health and Safety Consultant. The experiences and knowledge I've gained through my education and internship have solidified my passion for this field and set the foundation for my future endeavors.
