Jackie Ordemann, MD
Where did you attend medical school?
I went to Tufts University and was part of the Maine-Track program.
Where did you do your residency?
Here at the Family Medicine Residency of Western Montana!
Within your specialty, do you have sub-specialty areas of practice that you particularly enjoy?
Within family medicine, I am especially passionate about obstetrics/reproductive health and behavioral health. I love delivering babies and providing prenatal care. It is really special to get to know the family, be there for them during their delivery, and then continue to care for mom and baby afterwards as well. I also provide prenatal care in Seeley Lake, a rural community an hour north of Missoula, and it has been especially rewarding to be able to improve access to care. I also have a growing interest in culinary medicine and love discussing food and recipes with my patients.
What do you most enjoy about practicing Family Medicine?
I love the variety that each day brings - taking care of all people and all medical problems. I especially love the relationships that are formed with patients over time. Getting to know someone over years as they go through good times and tough times is incredibly rewarding. It is especially special to take care of whole families including providing their obstetrics and pediatrics care. Additionally it's just great to be performing a procedure one moment and the next be having a deep discussion with a patient about their mental health!
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
I feel like teaching enhances my experience of all the things I love about family medicine, our program, and clinic because of getting to share all of this with learners. It is incredible to be a small part of the residents’ journeys as they become amazing family doctors. I also spend a lot of time working with medical Ñý¼§Ö±²¥, particularly 3rd year medical Ñý¼§Ö±²¥, and it is a privilege to introduce them to family medicine and watch them grow over the course of their rotations with us. I also learn a ton from working with residents and medical Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ and so I think teaching also makes me a better family doctor.
What brought you to Montana?
I stumbled upon this program at the AAFP conference in Kansas City and was drawn to everything about this program from the people to the photos of Montana. I came to Missoula for an interview and pretty much from that day on I dreamed of being here. Aside from the program being great, I got to experience Glacier National Park, a first Friday art walk, and some incredible hiking right in Missoula as part of my 72 hour trip to Montana. My dreams came true and I got to come here for residency and I’ve never really considered leaving.
Why did you choose to be part of the FMRWM?
Originally because I matched here for residency :) But I stayed because I love it here. The community here at FMRWM is incredible and I have always felt really at home among the faculty, staff and residents. I also love that I get to teach, work with an underserved patient population, and live in Missoula all at once. I feel so lucky that I got to stay after finishing residency!
What are some of your interests outside of the clinic or classroom?
Hiking, cross-country skiing, running, and cooking/baking. I also love to travel and especially enjoy doing multi-day hiking trips overseas. Recently I have hiked the Coast to Coast trail in England and the Kungsleden in Sweden. I fancy myself to be a student of all things culinary and love learning about how to improve my cooking/baking. I am always trying new flavors and exploring new techniques.
What do you love about Western Montana?
Being able to get out into the wilderness so easily is definitely #1. Also it’s beautiful and Missoula is an amazing community to be a part of without feeling too big.
What is your favorite:
- Book? I think I am obligated to say Harry Potter given that I am notorious for being especially talented at Harry Potter trivia. But I also enjoy anything by Agatha Christie and various non-fiction books (especially about history/science).
- Album? Probably whatever is popular on Broadway right now. Currently I am obsessed with the Suffs soundtrack as I recently got to see the original cast on Broadway and I think it might have been the best thing I have ever seen! Past favorites include Hamilton, Wicked, and Phantom of the Opera.
- Movie? I’m not really sure on this one. I think I’d probably have to say Forrest Gump. I’m more into TV shows though and some recent favorites are Ted Lasso, The Great British Baking Show, and Somebody Feed Phil.
