Definitions
A scholarship is an amount paid for the benefit of a student (undergraduate or graduate) to aid in the pursuit of studies at The Ñý¼§Ö±²¥.
A fellowship is an amount paid for the benefit of an individual to aid in the pursuit of study or research.
Qualified Scholarship/Fellowship Grants
A qualified scholarship or fellowship grant is any amount received as a scholarship or fellowship that is used under the terms of the grant for:
- tuition and fees required to enroll in, or to attend The Ñý¼§Ö±²¥
- fees, books, supplies, and equipment required for courses at The Ñý¼§Ö±²¥
Qualified scholarship/fellowship grants are tax free only if the recipient is a candidate for a degree: defined as a student (full- or part-time) pursuing a degree (bachelors or higher) at The Ñý¼§Ö±²¥.
Payment for Services
Any scholarship or fellowship grant, in whole or in part, that represents payment for services must be included in income and is subject to taxation.
