Graduate Certificate in Public History
The Graduate Certificate in Public History trains graduate Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ to work in the field of public history. Our program includes instruction on how to plan and administer public history projects; how to work with community and organizational partners; how to interpret history for the public; and how to deploy historical methods in a wide variety of settings and for a wide variety of organizations, agencies, and clients. Internships allow Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ to work on real-world history projects with organizations and thereby gain skills and hands-on experience while also developing professional contacts that prepare them for a dynamic career in the twenty-first-century workforce.
Our program is open to M.A. and Ph.D. Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ in History and to other graduate Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ enrolled at the Ñý¼§Ö±²¥, as well as members of the community who hold a B.A. degree or equivalent and who enroll at UM as a non-degree seeking graduate student. (See the UM Graduate School's page on .) Non-history graduate Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ and members of the community must apply and be accepted to pursue the Public History certificate.

Graduate Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ enrolled in the History Department’s M.A. or Ph.D. program do not need to apply to pursue the certificate. These Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ should discuss the certificate with their advisor and let the Director of the Public History program know if they would like to pursue the certificate.
Graduate Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ at UM who are not enrolled with the History Department are also welcome to pursue the certificate. These Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ need to complete an application for the certificate, which they can do through the Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ Graduate School page.
Non-degree seeking Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ are welcome to apply for and pursue the Graduate Public History Certificate. We know that many working professionals may be interested in this option. Since non-degree seeking Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ do not have departmental advisors, they will need to work with the Graduate School to help them apply for graduate school and navigate questions or issues with graduate school. Please see the Graduate School’s page on for admissions information.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but interested Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ should contact the Director of the Public History Program to discuss when applications need to be received for a student to start in a given semester (typically two months before the beginning of the semester).
Once the applications are received, the Public History Committee and one member from the Graduate Program Committee will review the applications.
