UMPD keeps a daily crime log that records crimes by their nature, date, time, general location, and disposition of the complaint.  The purpose of the daily crime log is to record all criminal incidents and alleged criminal incidents that are reported to the campus police department. For example, if a student tells a UMPD officer that he lost his wallet in the parking lot behind a residence hall, it is not a criminal incident, and it is not recorded in the log.  However, if a student tells a UMPD officer that his wallet was stolen from his residence hall room, this is an alleged criminal incident which must be recorded in the log.

The crime log for the most recent calendar year is available for inspection, free of charge, to the public during regular business hours at UMPD, Facilities Services Building, Room 136.  Any portion of the crime log older than the current calendar year can be made available within two business days of the request.

Important Information Pertaining to Some Crime Log Entries

Some Crime Log Entries are marked with an asterisk (*).  These entries have been provided by a confidential Campus Security Authority (“CSA”), such as a medical or counseling provider. To comply with state and federal laws governing medical, counseling, and advocacy services, confidential CSAs do not provide UM's Clery officials with the identities of crime victims when reporting Clery statistics. Therefore, this may be a duplicate report that has appeared in a prior Crime Log, and responsive action may have already occurred. 

Crime log case numbers do not run sequentially. The University Police Department assigns a case number for all reportable activities, both criminal and non-criminal. Only case numbers generated for criminal activity are listed in the crime log.

Crimes are in chronological order. The most recent crimes are at the bottom of the list.

The crime log incidents will not match the crime statistics, as the crime log is compiled using the Montana State Code Annotated and the crime statistics are required by law to be compiled using the Federal Uniformed Crime Reporting crime definitions.

Entry Definitions

Criminal Case Numbers: These are entered by the actual case number in chronological order. (Example: 1712-00460).

Calls for Service Entry: University Police received a report of a possible crime but subjects are gone on arrival or nothing is detected. (Example: 17-12-27-008448).

 Other: Incidents with different case numbers than these, involve information received from other University Administrators, who are defined by federal law as "campus security authorities". These administrators share non-identifying information, with the University Police, that is provided by the victim. In these incidents, the victim did not file an official police report and therefore there will be no disposition. These incidents are reported to the University Police for statistical purposes and are posted to the Crime Log as the information is received by the University Police.

According to Federal Law, an institution may withhold any of the required fields of entry, i.e. nature, date, time, location, and/or disposition if any of the following conditions apply:

1. The disclosure is prohibited by law
2. If disclosure would jeopardize the confidentiality of the victim.
3. If disclosure would jeopardize an ongoing criminal investigation or the safety of an individual
4. If disclosure would cause a suspect to flee or evade detection
5. If disclosure would result in the destruction of evidence

Crime Log Disposition Definitions

On-going investigation: The case is currently being investigated.

Unfounded: The case is determined through investigation to be false or baseless. No offense occurred nor was attempted.

Conduct Referral- the referral of any person to any university official for further action. (Police may or may not be involved in a conduct referral)

Case Closed: This includes cases:

• Cleared by arrest
• with other agency jurisdiction
• In which current leads have been exhausted
