UM BSW Program Mission Statement
The mission of the Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ BSW Program is to prepare generalist social workers, grounded in a person-in-environment perspective and informed by scientific inquiry, to practice at multiple levels and assume a variety of social work roles. Social work Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ will gain the knowledge and skills to address individual well-being and social issues, promoting and advocating for social, economic, environmental, racial, and reproductive justice in local, rural, national, and global contexts. The program educates Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ to be ethical, reflective, collaborative, and innovative; to respect human diversity and relationships; and to promote cultural safety. Graduates will engage in research-informed, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive practice to promote the dignity, rights, and well-being of others, and contribute toward a more just and humane world.
The Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ BSW Program prepares generalist social work practitioners who:
- Possess the requisite ethical, knowledge, and skill base for effective generalist social work practice that requires critical thinking and a variety of professional perspectives, theoretical foundations, and evidence-informed approaches.
- Enhance the social functioning and quality of life of individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.
- Grounded in a strengths-based, anti-racist, and anti-oppressive perspective, Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ will serve diverse, underserved, and marginalized populations with a commitment to social, racial, economic, environmental, and reproductive justice and human rights.
- Commit to career-long professional development to enhance effectiveness of social work practice.
- Base their practice on the core values of the profession, including service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, competence, human rights, and scientific inquiry.
