Universities must play a leading role in education, research, policy development, information exchange, and community outreach in order to help create an equitable and sustainable future.
The Sustainable Campus Committee recognizes the importance of this and aims to lead by example through the adoption of the Talloires Declaration's ten principles. By identifying and recommending projects that move the University towards sustainability, the Committee will provide momentum and guidance to UM administration, faculty, staff, and Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ to achieve environmentally and socially responsible living.

Charge:
The Sustainable Campus Committee promotes sustainability at the Ñý¼§Ö±²¥. The Committee engages in strategic planning to fulfill the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), now titled the Carbon Commitment. The SCC monitors implementation of the university’s Climate Action Plan and educates the university community about sustainability and climate change.
Sustainability addresses the interconnections between ecological integrity, social justice, and economic prosperity. Sustainability seeks to build economic prosperity without compromising social well-being or ecological health.
Committee structure:
- The committee shall be composed of 14 members from the faculty, staff, administration, and Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ at the Ñý¼§Ö±²¥. The committee members shall be appointed by the UM President on the recommendation of ASUM, Staff Senate, Faculty Senate or SCC.
- Members shall serve a two-year term. Members can be reappointed for a maximum of two additional two-year terms by recommendation of the SCC.
- To capture a diversity of perspectives, the committee shall draw from a variety of departments and services found on the campus. Prospective committee members shall be invited to indicate their interest in committee membership by any SCC member, current or past. Faculty, staff, and student senates may also recruit potential committee members. If possible, prospective members should attend an SCC meeting before being voted onto the committee.
- The committee co-chairs may invite temporary, project-specific membership to enhance the work and expertise of the committee. Temporary members will not be voting members and will not become official members of the SCC unless they have been recommended for membership to fill an open committee position.
- There shall be three representatives from each of the following categories: administration, faculty, staff and Ñý¼§Ö±²¥. Student representation will usually include an ASUM representative, a MontPIRG representative, and at least one graduate student. The committee will also include three ex officio, non-voting members, the Sustainability Coordinator, the UM Dining Sustainability Director, and the Energy Manager.
Subcommittees shall be appointed by the Chair as needed to carry out the mission of the committee. Subcommittees are expected to report on their work at monthly meetings of the full committee.
