For Students, By Students
TRIO SSS Mentors provide academic, personal, and logistical guidance and support to other TRIO SSS Ñý¼§Ö±²¥, primarily freshmen and sophomores who are relatively new to UM.
Mentors will convey and uphold standards, norms, and values of a successful college student. Mentors should also challenge the student to stretch incrementally and progressively beyond their perceived limitations. The mentor is not an expert, but a student peer who has gained valuable lessons from life and school experience.
Rather than providing Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ with specific answers, the mentor will ask questions that guide Ñý¼§Ö±²¥ to their ideal solutions, keeping in mind that each student’s ideal solution will be unique. Together, the mentor and mentee will create short and long-term goals that are challenging and motivating, while also being realistic and obtainable.
