Before Contacting Faculty
After you’ve found professors with whom you are interested in working, continue to learn more about them. Have they been featured in UM News or other media sources for their scholarly work? What projects or questions guide them and their lab members? What are their most recent publications or projects? Do they work with specific groups, in specific geographic areas or ecosystems, or focus on specific species or topics?
Reading publications and engaging with materials created by professors is an important way to gain insight into their work and methods. When contacting professors, show that you’ve engaged with their scholarly work and understand how your interests align with the work they are doing.
