Unit News and Update Feed
Use this block and other assets to create a blog like page, posts that act as news stories and are formatted differently than your usual web pages, as well as a block that automatically updates with your new posts. This system is composed of the following three components:
- Unit Update Section Folder: Creates the folder your posts must be put in, the first post and the default/blog page for your posts.
- Unit Update Posts: These are your post/news pages, once created and placed in the above folder they will automatically be displayed in the block below and added to your default/blog page.
- News and Update Feed: This block displays the 3, 6 or 9 most recent posts along with a link to your default/blog page.
Create the Unit Update Section Folder
- Click Add Content in the Top Menu Bar.
- Select Unit Updates > Unit Update Section.
- Folder Name - Enter system folder name.
- Placement Folder - Select the folder where you want the feed to reside. This will automatically create a default page and a post page in that folder. NB: This folder and default page will need to be published to Production in order for the Unit Updates to appear on either your Staging or Production site.
- Edit the default page in the folder you just created.
- Display Name - Text entered in this field will display in the navigation.
- Title - Enter Title text.
- Unit Update Listing.
- Display Banner - If you select 'Yes,' choose an image for the banner that will be displayed across the top of the page. Add descriptive text of the image for those using a screen reader in the Image Alt Text field. Please note that this is a legal requirement.
- Intro Content - Enter descriptive text that will appear below heading and below the posts.
- Submit.
- When you are finished, click the three vertical dots in the top right of the editing window.
- Click Check Content & Submit.
- Review the Checks and update any issues if applicable.
- Click the Checkmark button in the upper right.
Create Your Posts
Either select the first post that was automatically created when you created the Unit Update Section, or create a new post.
- To create a new post, click Add Content in the Top Menu Bar.
- Select Unit Updates > Unit Update Post.
- Display Name - Text entered in this field will display in the navigation.
- Title - Enter Title text.
- Summary - Summary of the post that shows on listing pages in some designs, and social media sharing.
- Unit Update Post > Banner Image.
- Image File - Select the image you want to be displayed with the post. You can upload any size image and Cascade will automatically size the image for you.
- If you want to add an image to the body of the post and display to either the left or right of the post (with text wrapping), click on the image, then go to Formats > Custom > and then select either 'Lefte align image' or 'Right align image.'
- Alternative Text - Add descriptive text of the image for those using a screen reader - please note that this is a legal requirement.
- Scale Focus - Choose the area of the image where focus should zoom when scaling. Images will be resized automatically and this setting determines where the focus should zoom when scrolling.
- Caption - Text that appears below the photo when viewing the full news post.
- Image File - Select the image you want to be displayed with the post. You can upload any size image and Cascade will automatically size the image for you.
- Main Content - Text of full news story or post.
- Submit.
- When you are finished, click the three vertical dots in the top right of the editing window.
- Click Check Content & Submit.
- Review the Checks and update any issues if applicable.
- Click the Checkmark button in the upper right.
Create the block that will be added to a row.
- Click Add Content in the Top Menu Bar.
- Select Blocks > Row Blocks > News and Update Feed.
- Placement Folder - Select the location where you would like the block saved.
- News JSON Block.
- Row BG - Select Light or Dark background for the text.
- Heading - Enter the heading that will display above all posts e.g., 'News from the College of Humanities & Sciences.'.
- Heading Level - Select the heading level.
- JSON URL - Navigate to and select the default page of the Unit Update Section folder.
- In the top right of the Workspace click on ...More and select Live in the dropdown.
- You will be taken to the live version of that page. In the address bar, add .json before the .php extension. For example, '/cascade-support/how-to/build-your-website/blocks/unit-news-update-feed.php' would become '/cascade-support/how-to/build-your-website/blocks/unit-news-update-feed.json.php.' Copy that URL.
- Paste the URL into the JSON URL field in the News and Update Feed block. If you see a 'File Not Found' page when you enter that URL into your address bar, publish the Unit Updates Section folder that you created in the first step to Production.
- NB: this page needs to be published to the Production server. It will not work if published to the Staging sever.
- Submit.
- When you are finished, click the three vertical dots in the top right of the editing window.
- Click Check Content & Submit.
- Review the Checks and update any issues if applicable.
- Click the Checkmark button in the upper right.
- Attach the block to your page.
- Select or create the Row you want to attach the Block to.
- Set the Row Content Type to Row Block.
- Click the Choose Block button in the Block field then navigate to and select the Block you just created.
- Click the blue Choose button in the top right.
