All in the Hall is an initiative where all trash and recyclables are collected in a centralized location. All in the Hall requires removing single-stream trash cans from classrooms and hallways that typically collect both landfill and recycling items. The pairing of waste and recycling bins is critical, providing options for appropriate sorting when putting your items in a bin. The pairing of landfill and recycling bins in central and convenient locations increases waste diversion and recycling rates. By sending fewer items to the landfill, we provide economic and social benefits for UM, the Missoula community, and the greater environment that surrounds us. By asking office occupants to manage their own office trash and recycling, we hope to increase awareness of the materials we consume, recycle, and throw away to the landfill. All of our new recycling and landfill bins have intuitive signs to help with the sorting process. To help prevent contamination in our recycling bins, if you are unsure whether an item should be recycled or landfilled, please place it in the landfill bin.
It is up to the user(s) to sort your recycling and trash at one of our hallway locations. Please refer to the FAQ below on this page for additional information about the program. In addition to the sustainability and efficiency attributes previously mentioned, UM's custodial staff do not have to enter each office for trash service, they can use their limited time more effectively to clean and disinfect common-use areas of buildings. All in the Hall has been implemented on campuses and within municipal buildings across the country which has increased awareness and participation in waste diversion efforts.
Eck Hall was the first building selected on UM's campus to pilot an All in the Hall strategy. Aber Hall, Phyllis J. Education Center, Main Hall, Mansfield Library, Health Sciences, and portions of the University Center have followed. Combined with our new recycling stations and signage, we are collecting landfill and recycling data within these buildings and others to learn from the experience of our building occupants and those who service our landfill and recycling materials.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
All in the Hall is a recycling and waste management strategy that combines the two streams (recycling & waste) into a centralized location. For example, all landfill receptacles are paired with recycling bins so the user is always given the option to conveniently sort their items into the appropriate bin.
-
It is the responsbility of the office user to empty their own trash and recycling into the most convenient shared hallway zero waste station. When a building has subscribed to the All in the Hall program, UM Custodial will not service the trash cans in office spaces. Please make it a regular practice to empty and sort your items in our hallway stations.
-
By removing trash cans from classrooms, we are encouraging anyone who uses the room to use the hallway waste station to sort their trash and recyclables. In the event there is trash left in the classroom, UM custodial crew will remove items when cleaning the rooms each night.

It is up to you to empty your trash into the hallway waste station when appropriate.
If the receptacle is full, please don’t add trash that exceeds the capacity of the bin. The waste and recycling bins (in the hallway) are emptied multiple times per week by our recycling and custodial staff.

No, if you need a bag or liner please attempt to reuse the existing plastic liner bag as appropriate or supply your own bag. One suggested option would be to skip the plastic liner altogether.

Not yet, Eck Hall was chosen as one of the first-round pilot buildings to centralize all of our waste and recycling bins. Over time, we would like to install the infrastructure and expand this program to improve our efficiencies and waste reduction across UM's campus. We hope to learn from this experience in Eck Hall and appreciate feedback from building occupants and users. The following questions contain contact information to reach us.
